A HUGE COMMUNITY PROJECT 2000

In 1999, towns and villages everywhere were thinking up ways to commemorate the millennium and Ampthill decided to mark the occasion with a video record of the town. Local representatives and town councillors agreed that a recording should be made of Year 2000 events, together with a look at Ampthill’s past. The Ampthill Millennium Committee was formed to promote the idea to the community, and then manage the project from conception to delivery.

From little acorns big oaks sometimes grow, and Ampthill’s residents were so keen to weave together the rich and varied threads of their historic market town, that what started out as millennium initiative, developed into an unrivalled video history of town life. The Ampthill Video Archive now comprises an incredible 138 films, including cine film footage of Ampthill in the 1930s and 1960s, together with photos and postcards dating back to the turn of the last century. more >
